Civics/ESL

El Club Del Barrio, Inc. has formed a consortium with La Casa de Don Pedro, NCC Hispanic/Resource Center, and the Literacy Volunteers of America with the purpose of providing ESL/Civic instruction to community members free of charge. We will be utilizing a textbook written by Bill Bliss with Steven Molinsky called, “Voices of Freedom”. The curriculum will include civic instruction by covering topics such as government and American History. It will also introduce students to Basic English grammar and vocabulary. There will be multiple exercises within the text to expose students to the rudimentary processes associated with being an active citizen in a democratic form of government. There are also civic simulations such as a class election campaign, and several topics for group discussion. In addition, to the grammatical aspect of the course, we will cover conversational skills specifically designed to prepare students for the INS interview.
